Madeley War Memorial progress

Work to upgrade the area around the War Memorial in Madeley is progressing apace – as these photos sent in show.

The paved area around the memorial is being enlarged and levelled and will make way for a commemorative paving stone for local man Major Yate who earned a Victoria Cross in the battle of Cateau in 1914.

The Government provided stones for all Victoria Cross winners as part of the commemorations to mark the centenary of the First World War.

Money from Telford & Wrekin Council’s Pride in Your High Street grant fund has helped to fund the Madeley War Memorial restoration project, which is due to be completed in time for a rededication service on 26 August – the anniversary of the battle of Cateau.
